{"id":603,"date":"2018-07-17T12:06:36","date_gmt":"2018-07-17T12:06:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/finderc.org\/?p=603"},"modified":"2019-07-13T22:56:41","modified_gmt":"2019-07-13T22:56:41","slug":"finder-volunteers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/finderc.org\/index.php\/2018\/07\/17\/finder-volunteers\/","title":{"rendered":"FINDER volunteers (1)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"font_8\">FINDER has recently hosted 3 fanstatic volunteers who helped\u00a0 us sample and prepare bone fragments for ZooMS analysis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font_8\">We were delighted to host for 2 weeks, in May, <strong>Saltanat Amirova<\/strong>, a student from the Institute of Archaeology of UCL who worked\u00a0on material from Denisova Cave (Siberian Altai, Russia). Saltanat is from Kazakhstan so her knowledge of Russian was much appreciated in deciphering the individual bone labels written on tiny surfaces many years ago.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_607\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-607\" style=\"width: 525px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-607 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/finderc.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Saltanat2-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"525\" height=\"394\" srcset=\"https:\/\/finderc.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Saltanat2-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/finderc.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Saltanat2-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/finderc.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Saltanat2-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-607\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Saltanat Amirova, an Archaeology student at the Institute of Archaeology, UCL.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Laura Doody<\/strong>, an undergraduate (senior) studying neuroscience and classics, came all the way from Union College in the State of New York (USA) and spent 6 weeks between June and July at the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Human History in Jena, working alongside Samantha Brown.\u00a0Laura has been helping us sample and analyse new samples from Denisova Cave.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_612\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-612\" style=\"width: 525px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-612 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/finderc.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/image2-1024x768.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"525\" height=\"394\" srcset=\"https:\/\/finderc.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/image2-1024x768.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/finderc.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/image2-300x225.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/finderc.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/image2-768x576.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/finderc.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/image2.jpeg 1600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-612\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Laura Doody preparing samples for ZooMS at the Max Planck facility in Jena.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Finally, <strong>Geoff Church<\/strong>,\u00a0 an archaeology student from Birkbeck, UCL, came to Oxford to help us sample, among others, material from Strashnaya Cave in the Siberian Altai. Geoff worked tirelessly for a week in late June and managed to sample nearly 500 bones! Strashnaya Cave has been most recently excavated by Andrei Krivoshapkin and colleagues and has yielded already some human fossils.
